Funding Sources

Federal Funding
Professional Organization Funding
Nonprofit Society and Foundation Funding

Below is a list of some federally funded programs that support K-12 educator-scientist partnerships, as well as a few programs funded by nonprofit organizations. There are certainly others. In addition, many corporations fund partnerships, especially local ones. Check the corporations’ Web sites or their associated foundation sites. Your professional society may also be a source of limited support. Be sure to check the members-only pages; some funding opportunities are not posted on publicly accessible Web pages. Finally, states typically offer funding, so check your state's department of education Web site.

Unlike most science research grants, applicants for education and science education research grants must often be an institution, not an individual. This means that you’ll have to get the cooperation of your partner school, school district, or home institution before you consider preparing a proposal. Also, be sure that the appropriate organization is in a position to accept such an award.

A few commercial websites compile lists of nonprofit agencies and corporation-affiliated foundations that award grants for education. Be sure to consult these. They are an excellent way to find niche funding and award programs that are specific to limited geographical areas.

If you’re a nonprofit organization that awards funding for K-12 science education programs and would like to be considered for inclusion on this list, please contact us at
