I currently work in the Handel Laboratory at UCSD and study the ligand-induced conformational changes of chemokine receptors, a family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that play a key role in inflammation, cancer metastasis, and entry of HIV into immune cells. We are utilizing spectroscopic and other biophysical techniques to see how chemokines bring about functionally selective conformational states in chemokine receptors that elicit specfic downstream signaling pathways.
