Dear Partner in Science Education,

The Curriculum Supplement Series from the National Institutes of Health is distributed to educators across the country free of charge. We designed this popular series (for grades K through 12) to promote inquiry-based, interdisciplinary learning and to stimulate students’ interest in health and science. The 15 supplements now available bring into the classroom current medical discoveries, scientific data, and case studies from NIH--the primary federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research.

The supplements are all-in-one teaching materials that are aligned with the National Science Education Standards released by the National Academy of Sciences. More than 250,000 copies of the NIH supplements have been ordered, proving their value to educators around the nation. In fact, the state of North Carolina recently adopted an NIH supplement as an officially recommended resource for middle school science teachers statewide.

We’re in the process of aligning every supplement with each state’s standards in science, mathematics, English language arts, and health. This state-specific, cross-curricular alignment should help teachers and schools incorporate the supplements into their classrooms. Every effort is being made to use the most currently available published academic standards for each state.

Each stand-alone supplement contains one to two weeks’ worth of lessons on science and human health that can be easily incorporated into a broader curriculum. The supplements are self-contained teacher guides, featuring background information, lesson plans, take-home materials, and interactive activities (usually Web-based). The activities may be used in sequence or as individual lessons. Students who complete them gain a deeper understanding of the importance of basic research to advances in medicine and personal health.

A team of top scientists and educators developed the supplements, which were field-tested by teachers and students across the country. We trust that you will find these supplements to be a valuable resource, and we’re eager to hear about your classroom experience with them.
