Enzyme May Play Unexpected Role in Asthma - Summary of research indicating that the enzyme arginase may play a role in causing asthmatic symptoms (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases)

Ethical, Legal and Social Implications Research Program - A fact sheet about the ethical, legal and social implications research program, which supports examinations and investigations of the ethical, legal and social implications of genetics research. (National Human Genome Research Institute)

Experimental Therapy Stops Allergic Reactions in Mice - Summary of an experimental approach to treating allergic diseases. In mice, the scientists used a genetically engineered molecule to connect two receptors on the key immune system cells that cause allergic reactions. Cross-linking these receptor molecules short-circuited the type of allergic reaction that leads to asthma, allergic rhinitis, and even the potentially deadly anaphylaxis caused by food allergy. Findings Evolution Issue - This special, evolutionary-themed issue Findings celebrates the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his book On the Origin of Species by featuring the exciting work of two evolutionary biologists and short articles that highlight the role of evolution in medical research. Findings is a semi-annual magazine produced by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences that aims to put a human face on scientific research. From Genes to Geography: Cutting Edge of Alcohol Research - Facts sheet about the development of alcohol use problems, including alcoholism, and how it is influenced by multiple genes, the environment and interactions between the two. A number of major technological advances are helping investigators make significant progress toward understanding the roles of genes and the environment.
