What Is Science in the Cinema?

Science in the Cinema is a FREE film festival held each summer at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. One evening a week for six weeks, a film with a medical science theme is screened. Following each film, a guest speaker with expertise in the film's subject area leads a discussion with the audience about the science depicted in the film. The film series is sponsored by the NIH Office of Science Education. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Tic Code

	Set against the sights and sounds of the Greenwich Village jazz scene, the Tic Code is the story of three people who come to accept that, even though life doesn’t always deal you a fair hand, you learn to play with the one you’ve got. For 12-year-old piano prodigy, Miles (Chris Marquett), the only escape from his troubles is into the world of jazz music. Focusing on Miles’ problems as a convenient way to ignore her own, his shy, gentle mother, Laura (Polly Draper), secretively arranges with a jazz club owner for Miles to jam with his musical idol, saxophonist Tyrone Pike (Gregory Hines.) Miles and Tyrone become instant friends, and when Tyrone meets Laura, romance blossoms. But the secret Tyrone shares with Miles threatens to destroy everything. This movie features cameos by jazz greats: Dick Berk, John B. Williams, and Carlos McKinney.

Passion Fish

	Mary-Alice Culhane (Mary McDonnell) is a successful wisecracking soap opera star who returns to her home in rural Louisiana after an automobile accident leaves her paralyzed. Her cruel but hilarious humor and hard drinking drive away a succession of nurses until she meets her match in Chantelle (Alfre Woodard). Together, they explore the Louisiana bayou, as well as the murkier waters of men, romance, and family. The two women eventually become friends and help each other to heal emotionally.

The Snake Pit

Her husband (Mark Stevens) has placed her in a state mental institution in the hope that her illness will be understood, so that they can resume their lives together. Frightened, irrational, and yet, at times insightful, Virginia must spend several months under the care of her compassionate doctor (Leo Genn) before she can face the troubling secrets of her past and be cured. This classic Darryl F. Zanuck film received six Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress.

The Eighth Day

	Georges (Pascal Duquenne) has Down's syndrome, living at a mental-institution, Harry (Daniel Auteuil) is a busy businessman, giving lectures for young aspiring salesmen. He is successful in his business life, but his social life is a disaster since his wife left him and took their two children with her. This weekend his children came by train to meet him, but Harry, working as always, forgot to pick them up. Neither his wife or his children want to see him again and he is driving around on the country roads, anguished and angry. He almost runs over Georges, on the run from the institution since everybody else went home with their parents except him, whose mother is dead. Harry tries to get rid of Georges but he won't leave his new friend. Eventually a special friendship forms between the two of them, a friendship which makes Harry a different person.

Metrorail:	Take the Red Line to the Medical Center station. As you exit the escalator or elevator, bear left and take the sidewalk toward Natcher Building (Building 45). Building 45 is the large white (modern) building with green-colored windows directly across from the National Library of Medicine.

From I-495	Take the Capital Beltway (I-495) to Route 355 (Rockville Pike/Wisconsin Avenue) south toward Bethesda. Go approximately 1 1/2 miles. Turn right onto Center Drive of the NIH campus. You will see the Natcher Building (Building 45) on your immediate right. Building 45 is the large white (modern) building with green-colored windows directly across from the National Library of Medicine. Note: Please DO NOT use the underground parking garage located under Natcher; the garage is closed and locked at 7:00 p.m. Parking is available in the Visitor Lot located across the street in front of the National Library Medicine, or you may park in lots that are designated for NIH Employees after 6:00 p.m.

From Washington, D.C. and Bethesda, Maryland	Take Wisconsin Avenue north through downtown Bethesda (Wisconsin Avenue becomes Rockville Pike). Turn left onto Center Drive of the NIH campus.
